expected. we are at the old forum where the los angeles lakers used to play a little basketball back in the day before they moved. and you know, it gave an opportunity for thousands of people in the englewood area to come out and see the space shuttle. they had a marching band here. they've had music playing. "endeavour" has been sitting there for the better part of an hour. a lot longer than we had anticipated, fredericka. and i am joined by stephanie stillson who works for nasa and has been in charge of preparing all three of the space shuttle orbiters for their retirement. and stephanie, just a great reception from the people in los angeles. right? >> absolutely. from the minute we got here, prior to offloading, before the "endeavour" even got here, great support from the folks at los angeles international airport and the surrounding communities. it's been very welcoming. >> reporter: from your perspecti perspective, the shuttle retiring like this, there had been concerns because of the close quarters. there's areas where there's not much clearance. >> very true. in fact in some c

concerned about this stretch of the route from los angeles international airport to the california science center. now, what we can show you is, okay, we have the wing that's really close to that tree. if we look over on the other side of the street, you can now see the platform starting to move. but you can see it's almost out of room on the other side of the street. so it's a very, very delicate maneuver. this platform that it's on, each of the wheels can move individually. it can go side to side and backwards and forwards so they're trying to reposition it right now to get around that tree and try to save it. we have asked a couple of the workers here who are managing this whole process whether they're going to cut the tree down or not. they say they don't know. they have tried throughout the process to save as many trees as possible. 400 have been cut down along the route. they'll be replaced 2 for 1, but some of the residents of the communities have been upset because they don't want to lose any trees. we're still watching the process and we're going to see whether it gets by the tree

tremendous opportunity for the people of los angeles and they're coming out with their kids and their families and getting to take pictures with the orbiter and what happened was they had to move from the airport before they got into l.a. rush hour traffic. they didn't want to be dealing with that so they moved it early this morning and it's only gone a mile and a half, two miles from this location here and it's going sit here for nine hours before they actually move it again. they're doing a little bit of reconfiguring of the transporter system which is incredibly unique in and of itself and it's remote controlled and a guy literally walks in front of it moving these hundreds and hundreds of wheels under it so they can move it and turn it around different streets and they'll reconfigure it today and they'll be taking down power lines before they head out and move again, but the whole journey is going to be 12 miles over a course of 46 hours so not until tomorrow night will they get to the california science center. the shuttle's wingspan is 75 feet wide and they've had to literally c

obama is in los angeles at this hour. he's there raising cash at a fund-raiser. you may recall he just set a record of $181 million in september. white house correspondent dan lothian is traveling with the president. dan, at this point he's on record to raise almost a billion dollars now, and that's not including those outside super-pacs. how much is he expecting to raise tonight? >> reporter: well, millions of dollars, and we'll try to break that down later on in the evening, exactly how much they're expected to raise. they really believe this is important money that they need for a couple of reasons. first of all, the race is very tight. when you look at the national numbers, the race is very close. then you break it down to those key battleground states in ohio, in florida, in colorado and virginia. very close there as well. so they need it this money to really beef up their ground operation going into election day and also saturate the air wae waves with the telephone ads. they're bringing in millions of dollars. a lot is going out the door as well, fredricka. >> so, dan, a lot of
